What is Osmo?

The Osmo system is an educational technology product designed to enhance learning and creativity in children by combining physical objects and digital gameplay. The Osmo system consists of a base, which holds a compatible tablet or smartphone, and a range of interactive game sets that work in conjunction with the tablet's camera.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Osmo Base securely holds your tablet or smartphone, while the Osmo Reflector is placed over the device's front-facing camera. A mirror within the Osmo Reflector re-directs the camera view so that an image of the play area in front of the base is visible to our computer vision software. The software is then able to interpret real world actions in the play area and effect digital gameplay accordingly.

GUIDING A HANDS ON PLAY PHILOSOPHY

Year: 2017-2023

Role: Director of Industrial Design

Overview: Osmo is about creating playful and engaging ways for kids to learn and experience technology in a hands on way. Our game hardware needs to be designed with the constraints of our platform’s computer vision system in mind. My role as director was to lead the development of interactions and guide teams through the development the physical interface items.

INCREASING OSMO’S TAM

Year: 2017-2022

Role: Director of Industrial Design

Overview: A constant goal for the hardware team was looking for ways to make our platform more accessible to users and increase the total addressable market for the brand.

This was a constant cycle of monitoring device releases, then testing and modifying our platform to maintain compatibility.

For more information about the design of Osmo’s platform please see our case study in the projects section.

BUILDING NEW REVENUE CENTERS

Year: 2017-2022

Role: Director of Industrial Design

Overview: Our hardware team championed the creation of an accessory line for Osmo that was based on market observations and a clear understanding of our customer’s pain points.

The key areas we chose to focus on were protection, storage, and organization.

PACKAGING FOR GROWTH

Year: 2017-2022

Role: Director of Industrial Design

Overview: At Osmo packaging structure development was owned by the hardware team. Our focus with packaging was to provide a delightful unboxing experience that would naturally guide a parent through setting up the device. We also wanted a structure that would feel more like a game or technology product than a toy.

SCALING PACKAGING SYSTEM

The form factor needed to be scalable for the various ways that users would enter our system. We also needed to consider the scale of the box and how it related to MSRP as well as the perceived value of the contents.

The solution became a modular system that would establish a clear value to the consumer.

FLEXIBILITY THROUGH MODULARITY

Internal components with a standardized footprint meant that bases and games could be quickly and easily combined to make customized offerings for our retail partners.

CREATING A GUIDED UNBOXING EXPERIENCE

Growth hacking with a compelling demo
